Formosa 5 Offshore Wind Farm is Synera Renewable Energy (SRE)’s first floating offshore wind project. With a maximum potential capacity of 1,536MW, the wind farm will be located 20km off the coast of Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan. Passing the EIA review in 2023, Formosa 5 emerges as the first floating offshore wind project to pass the EIA review and obtain the development right in Taiwan.
Compared with bottom-fixed foundations, floating foundations allow access to waters deeper than 50m and offer greater environmental benefits of less noise and relatively minor impact on the marine environment as they do not require piling. Furthermore, as floating wind turbines can be pre-assembled onshore, risks of offshore construction and the time required for foundation installation can be significantly reduced.
To build a floating wind farm tailored to Taiwan’s weather and sea conditions, Formosa 5 plans to deploy semi-submersible floating platforms resistant to typhoons and earthquakes which Taiwan is prone to.
SRE is already a pioneer in offshore wind in Taiwan. After solidifying our position as a leader in bottom-fixed offshore wind, we also want to be a forerunner in floating offshore wind to stay at the forefront of the industry trend. By promoting floating wind power and fostering the supply chain, we aspire to develop the key, cutting-edge technology for Taiwan and in the near future, duplicate our experience in neighboring markets.
